What is the shadow program?

The Producers Guild of America is proud to offer its members a new member-exclusive Mentoring Shadow Program that pairs members with mentors who have agreed to be shadowed on set or in their office. This program is designed to help mid-to-high level producers gain practical knowledge needed to advance their careers.

Mentors can include include Showrunners, Executives, Producers, Post-Producers, and VFX Producers working in film, television, and digital media. The length of each shadow opportunity is determined by the mentor and can last from three days to multiple weeks.

The PGA Mentoring Shadow Program is open to all PGA members nationwide, and is a year-round program. Members may apply for opportunities irrespective of where they live.

What is the application/review process?

The first step of the process is to declare your interest in being considered for future opportunities. To do this, you will need to update your PGA member profile on the Guild’s website by choosing what genres, area of focus, and locations that best match your ideal opportunity by clicking here.

When an opportunity comes along, we will email those who fit the initial criteria (genre, focus, location) with a questionnaire that is specific to the opportunity. After the deadline closes, the responses of all those who have submitted for the opportunity will be sent to the Mentoring Committee for review.

In an effort to overcome unconscious bias and ensure the best final candidate pool based solely on the strength of their application, we will remove personally identifiable information (e.g., name, gender, age, council, education, and years of experience) prior to submitting all applications to the Mentoring Committee Chairs.

The chairs will select five finalists for personal interviews based solely on the strength and passion of the application. Interviews will be conducted by phone/video with the five finalist candidates for each opportunity. Three final candidates will be presented to the production company to select the member.

If selected to participate, members are expected to be available for the full duration of the opportunity in the location indicated.

What are the expectations of a member?

Anyone selected to participate in a shadowing opportunity must commit to the following:

  • Meet with mentor to discuss program and opportunity details
  • Work with the mentor on scheduling the shadow timeline
  • Be in clear and regular contact with their Mentor regarding all aspects of the opportunity
  • Sign any NDA, confidentiality agreements, etc that are required by the production
  • Cover all travel expenses/costs for opportunities outside of the mentees home location
  • Adhere to the Producers Guild of America Code of Conduct during the opportunity as well as the Guild’s Anti-Sexual Harassment Guidelines.

What can I expect to get out of participation?

The Goal is to allow members to learn practical skills necessary to advance their careers. We want to help Guild members build relationships to enhance their careers and witness best practices.

How do I sign up?
